Time Wasting

Qafcomments tagged me for this one. In turn, I tag:pepino21786 bradys_rulztosca15betty122_alicespringsWhat were you doing 10 years ago?I was the Associate Administrator for Finance for the Department of Anesthesia of the University of Pennsylvania. My husband was alive, and we had season tickets to the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Our Big Trip that year was three weeks in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Helsinki. Among other books, that year I read “Dangerous” by Amanda Quick and “Inheritor” by C.J. Cherryh each twice. Life was good. What were you doing 1 year ago?I was still working as the part-time accountant for The Printer’s Place even though I’d told myself when I took the job the previous summer that I would quit after I closed the year. 26 February was the fourth anniversary of my husband’s death, and I was splitting the Orchestra subscription with my youngest son, John. I had dropped the Flyers' season tickets. I was going to read only 24 books that whole year, the least since I got a library card when I was nine, but including the play “Equus,” and “Freakonomics,” which inspired me to make “Dominance’s” Justin a professor of Economics. Mostly, however, I was responding, at great length, to Chering and Pepino’s recaps and waiting on tenterhooks for S5. Life was good. Five snacks you enjoy:1.) Chocolate ice cream.2.) Peppermint chocolate chip ice cream.3.) Wasabi peanuts.4.) Kit-Kat bars.5.) Big, round, not-too-sweet sugar cookies.Five songs to which you know all the lyrics: 1.) Down in the Valley2.) Would that be "Down in the Valley" as inDown in the valleyThe valley so lowLean your head overAnd hear the wind blow.?My gramma had these old recipe books she used as song books. She grew up during the depression and they had no money for books, so she would write songs on scrap paper and paste them into the books. I learned a lot of neat songs no one else knows, as well as all these rhymes.I'm quite sure you're nowhere near my mamaw's age (she's gone) but that was one song she had pasted in there at some point. That brought back a nice memory. There are slacks with the crease sewn in?DVD player with slo-mo buttonPut that together with a frame-by-frame clicker (which you can pretty much do by hitting Pause repeatedly) and you've got a hobby. Well, I found one that way, anyway. :)

I lived in the Ozarks (Fayetteville, Arkansas) from age 8 to 13. If you've ever seen "Brother, Where Art Thou," you've had a glimpse into some parts of my childhood. (Not all - my daddy was a doctor and from Philadelphia, but I heard almost all the songs in that movie sung live, plus of couese, "Down in the Valley.")"There are slacks with the crease sewn in?"Yep. Polyester slacks with a crease (sort of a little fold of material) down the front of the leg. It was supposed to make an unpressable material looked pressed."Put that together with a frame-by-frame clicker (which you can pretty much do by hitting Pause repeatedly) and you've got a hobby."Hey, I think we share a hobby! :)I live in the Appalachias and I think we may share some culture with the Ozarks. My dad actually works for TVA, which is what was responsible for the flood in "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" (which I'm sure you already knew since TVA stretches beyond TN). Anyway, this area is big on that type of music as well- we actually have three FM stations that play nothing but "You are My Sunshine" (hmmmm)- type songs all the time. My mamaw was from Philadephia, TN (yeah there's one down here, too). My family actually knows the Parton family (yeah, I'm SO proud of that) and we have to hear "Big Rock Candy Mountain" every. single. Christmas.

wteladaeshiy said...

We definitely share some culture. I lived in Fayetteville in the 40s, before TV got to the mountains, and "Grand Ole Opry" was the high light of my week. I'd close myself in my bedroom, lay out a solitaire, and listen to Tennessee Ernie Ford, Cousin Minnie Pearl, and The Oak Ridge Boys. *sigh* My parents exposed me to Gilbert & Sullivan, "The Pines of Rome," and Vivaldi but I'm telling you...right alongside the operettas and the classical music, I was absorbing "Man of Constant Sorrow" and of course "Big Rock Candy Mountain" which I first heard on a record easily 1/4" thick and with grooves on only one side. I am the oldest in my family by six years, so I'm the only one who experienced the mountains during their formative years. It's nice to know there are other hillbillies out there. FanSee

It's good to have a full compliment of musical tastes, though. Mamaw taught me solitaire, too, except she called it "solitary", which I guess is sort of correct if you think about it. I liked Minnie Pearl when I was a little girl. I always forgot her name and called her the lady with the tag on her hat, lol. It's really neat that we have some of the same cultural references. :)

Those are the songs you know by heart? That's so great! I love those songs and all were sung to me by mother, father and grandparents. In fact, when I was 3, I volunteered to sing a song in Sunday school and I sang "Love and Marriage." It was not the hit I anticipated but has always made for a great story. Have you seen the film, "Songcatcher" with Janet McTeer, Aiden Quinn and Emmy Rossum? Great film on old music, folk music, and mountain people. In addition, it has a beautiful lesbian love story.

Y'know, at first I couldn't think of any songs I knew by heart, and then my childhood came roaring back. I put "Songcatcher" in my queue, and with any luck I'll see it before the end of the year. Think of how much time I spend writing fanfic, fooling around here, and playing Snood, and you'll realize that I don't put in a lot of time in front of the TV. When I am watching, I am frequently watching series such as (right now) "Nip/Tuck." It's so much easier to fit in a 50 minute episode than a two-hour flic. FanSee

Hello, Fansee, it's Dismount, here to regale you with my opinions about the latest episodes of QAF I've watched. Sorry about that, it's probably not going to be a very interesting ride for you -- but you did ask for it! *g*So. The prom night. Oh my god. I have no words. And, perversely, I loved it. I adored those few episodes where Brian let his good side show, where he was sweet and sensitive and loving. When he cried at the hospital I did to. And I love Justin when he's weak and vulnerable. I can't help it -- angst is my forte. So the eps involving pain seem to be my favorite. Hmmmm... does that make me a sadist? I don't think so, I don't enjoy real people's pain, just TV characters', it seems. Can I ask... I'm at the very start of season two (just finished ep 204)... is there more angst coming up? I don't want to know what kind, just if there is. Sorry about this. While watching the eps I had a much more interesting interpretation, but it seems to have dwindled over time. Thanks for listening to this rubbish!DismountPS: What exactly is Snood?

And, perversely, I loved it.Is it the best or what? Like you, I watched it on DVD. (S4 was on as I watched but I didn't realize it.) Up to that point, I'd been watching an episode a night, very methodically. I watched the end of 122 and set a speed record for getting 201 in the DVD player. So much for restraint and discipline. From then on I watched a minimum of three episodes a night, every night, until I was finished. So the eps involving pain seem to be my favorite. Hmmmm... does that make me a sadist? I don't think so, I don't enjoy real people's pain, just TV characters', it seems.Character torture. You like character torture. Brian is so arrogant and controlled that we just love seeing his insides ripped out. A normal, ordinary reaction...for those of us into character torture, anyway. Can I ask... Hi! Remember me? Sorry it's been so long -- I meant to run to my computer every day and express my opinions as the show progressed, but it was just too captivating and now I've just finished season 4 (!!!!), which means there're no more episodes left to rent which means I have time to stop and talk about it. So. I officially love QAF, and I take back all the bad things I've said about Brian now that I've seen how selfless and charitable he can be (even if he won't let anyone know about it). When he got cancer I started laughing -- cancer! and in such an ironic place, too -- but then I thought about it and it became suddenly very wrong, like when a racing horse breaks its leg or a prized painting is kept shut up in somebody's attic or something (I know, bad analogies, but still).I cried a bit too. I cried when Mel and Lins split up for the Final Time (it's not *really* the final time, is it?). I cried when Brian finished the Liberty Ride and also during the ride itself, when he imagined Justin cheering him on. I cried when Vic died (what fucking awful timing, he can't die when he and Debbie are fighting, he just can't!!! I'm still in denial about the whole thing). I cried when Liberty avenue once again became safe for perverts, and I cried during the ep where we think Justin has given in to the Dark Side and then he chooses to walk away instead of pulling the trigger, knowing that he still got back at Chris Hobbs. I also cried when Justin cut his hair, it was so *nice* before. By the way, in case you didn't know, these were all good tears -- I was enjoying the angst. Now on to the things I *didn't* like, because you know you want to hear me bitch. I really, really hate Ted. When he had his crystal freakout I honestly didn't want him to pull himself out of it, go to rehab and resume a normal life -- I wanted him to die. Ted is a very dark and unhappy person, and I just *don't like him,* especially when he's with Emmett (and wtf is that about, anyway?). I also don't like Hunter. He just doesn't seem convincing to me, plus he's a total asshole; I mean, he's been forced into prostitution from the age of 12 -- you'd think that would leave *some* sort of lasting damage, but instead he's a normal, if somewhat bratty teenager. True, he does have a The World Owes Me chip on his shoulder, which is to be expected, but... Urgh, he just doesn't seem like a real character to me.I am now pining for season five. Who knows how long I'll have to wait to see it! I want to know what happens next, damn it!Over the course of the show, I really enjoyed watching Brian's character develop, watching him go from a self-centered slut-boy to... well, whatever he is now, which is more humble and caring though still arrogant as all hell. But he asked Justin to move in with him again -- promiscuous... which almost seems wrong. I kinda want the old Brian back.So. Do you know when season five comes out on video? I'm dying to watch more. Nope, haven't friended teary-eyed2 yet, but I'll go check her out soon. Now that I have no more QAF to watch, do you have any good fanfic you can perhaps recommend? I'm not looking for porn (ahem, right now), more plot. And anything in which Hunter is the main character would be nice, as I'm curious to see how -- and even if -- he is portrayed in fanfiction. If you know of anything good (especially anything not archived at xhale slowly, I've read most if it already), that'd be great. Or perhaps you could point me to some other QAF archives? Thanks ever so much, I am eternally in your debt. Love and kisses, DismountPS: Ah, snood. *is intrigued*PPS: Nope, haven't been able to watch ep 110 yet. Argh. well, at least it's something to look forward to.

Picking up where I left off:I also cried when Justin cut his hair, it was so *nice* before. After the first shock, I thought Randy looked great with a buzz cut. It was the only thing I did like about the Pink Posse, although I thought that the story arc was believable: Justin needed to face how he felt about the assault.I also don't like Hunter.I was similarly annoyed by the story arc until the episode where he tells Michael and Ben the truth about his mother. When Harris Allen curls into a fetal position and goes all stone-faced, I fell in love with him as an actor. After that I was willing to forgive any unrealistic elements of the character. You know, I don't know of any Hunter fanfic, but I'll give a shout out on my LJ. If there's anything worth reading, someone on my flist will know about it. As for other sites, Queer Eyes has a great collection. Among the authors listed there, I particularly like Erin. You can also try mining BJfic.net which has some great fics and some perfectly horrid ones (Brian cross-dressing?). Then, of course, there's Chering. I kinda hate to recommend the last because I know for a fact that Chering has a policy that at least 30% of the chapters have to be porny. So you might not want to go there. Actually, everything I read has a high porn index, so beware. Another problem is all these sites are loaded with post-S5 stories, so if you don't want to be spoiled....Do you know when season five comes out on video? I'm dying to watch more.Mark May 7th on your calendar. I'm hoping they have good extras like S1, but this is a Showtime production so I'm not optomistic. FanSeeP.S. If you have a tendency to get obsessed, I'd avoid Snood.

Whoo-hoo! Long break but a nice lengthy reply. Works for me.I officially love QAF, and I take back all the bad things I've said about Brian now that I've seen how selfless and charitable he can be (even if he won't let anyone know about it). He's a complex character, more complex than CowLip probably expected. So often Gale Harold's face is more eloquent than the words he's given to speak. Look, for instance, at his face in the bar scene in S1 (not sure of the episode). There's been a good-bye party for David and Michael and Brian can't stand it anymore. He gets up and goes to sit alone at the bar. He overhears David and Michael talking, and as he listens, his face and posture convey better than words how dependent he is on his Mikey and how much he hates this separation.I cried during the ep where we think Justin has given in to the Dark Side and then he chooses to walk away instead of pulling the trigger, knowing that he still got back at Chris Hobbs.I really was scared all during the Pink Posse story arc. I was so afraid that Justin would do something irreversible that would a.) land him in court, and/or b.) scar him some more. More later. The 13-year-old who now lives with me has dibbies on the computer. FanSee

Ethan! I actually liked him.If you look carefully, you can see how CowLip (more specifically, Patrick Antosh) set up a very cute guy to look like a dweeb. In the outdoor scenes, he wears some kind of a puffy coat, belted at the waist. The effect is to make him look like he's wearing a feedsack. And that's only the most blatent instance I can think of. That and the chin rat. A lot of people thought he was too arrogant and self-important, which is funny since most of those people LOVED Brian. I thought Ethan's arrogance was attractive. As they say, that's just me. (I liked Sam Auerbach, too.) FanSee

Thanks so very much for the recs. I hope you feel no qualms about reccing me the porny fics, because honestly, I have absolutely no problem with said porny fics -- no problem at all -- just at the time I was more in the mood for plot without a sexual focus, you know?Haven't checked out Queer Eyes yet (though I will soon). I really liked Chering, however, especially the fic that chronicles Brian's life from kindergarden and up (I love fics that center on the characters' pasts). That was, sadly, the only fic I could read, as Chering's other fics all seem to involve season 5 (damn you Showtime for not being available to people without a cable connection!) I also really liked Erin, especially the fic Five Reasons to Keep Loving Him, which honestly made me cry a little bit. I've been to BJfic.net before, and have generally had a hard time untangling the good fics from the Brian Cross-dressing ones. Despite that, thank you so much for all the recommendations, which should keep me satisfied for, oh, about a week, before I get impatient and start contemplating buying the seasons off ebay.I marked May 7th on my calender (seriously), then went to amazon.com to see what they had to say about QAF. They had one season-five disk set for about $40. What's up with that? As to Snood... I tried it. It wigged me out. All those tiny rows of creepy faces slowing advancing towards you like an army of ravenous demons... *shudders* I prefer smoother games with brighter colors, such as the ones you can download one hour free of off the 'net and then spend years trying to uninstall off your computer before they start causing problems. I once played a game in which I was a beach ball in Beijing whose sole purpose in life was to roll over empty patches of dirt and plant flowers (though how a beach ball plants flowers I'll never understand) while avoiding angry boomerangs and beach ball-sized germs. Ahem, anyway...Thanks again for all the help and enlightenment, so to speak. By the way, have you ever seen any of the original British series of QAF? I've heard it's a lot better (hmmm...), if darker and more intense. Love,Dismount

desaparqzcaaeui70yahoocom said...

Gale Harold really is an unexpectantly good actor. You're completely right about the bar scene, as well, of course, as other scenes that I can't now recall, in which Brian's carefully schooled expression of unflappable calm dissolves (sometimes) into true emotion. I was scared too during the whole Pink Posse thing. I sat in front of my TV screen and talked to it, blurting out, "No, Justin, don't do it!" every few minutes; my roommates must have thought me a bit nuts.A thirteen year old, huh? I really liked Chering, however, especially the fic that chronicles Brian's life from kindergarden and up (I love fics that center on the characters' pasts).Hmmm. Glad you liked it. Right now Chering has us working on another installment of Announcements which you definitely should NOT read, nor should you read "Episode 514." You could read "Bodily Fluids," however, as that is post-308 and was written before S5 started filming. "Dominance" is AU (Alternate Universe), not post-S5, so if you don't like AU....We're going to be posting a couple of one-offs - not sure how many - that's Cher's department - before we post the new installment of "Announcements," so you might want to friend Cher.I've been to BJfic.net before, and have generally had a hard time untangling the good fics from the Brian Cross-dressing ones. One of the good writers there is Plumsuede. Her "Beyond the Yellow Brick Road" is all post-S5, but you can safely read almost everything else of hers...and she seems to make it clear where they fit in so you won't accidentally read something you oughten't.When you run out of stuff to read, let me know and I'll give you a URL for Gaedhal. Talk about prolific! and everything is written as though the last episode aired was 203 or something like that. They had one season-five disk set for about $40. What's up with that?Hong Kong rip-off, filmed right off a TV. I bought S4 that way, and it was O.K. I was also satisfied with the Hong Kong version of the second season of "La Femme Nikita" I bought, but a friend's copy had one, crucial episode entirely missing.By the way, have you ever seen any of the original British series of QAF?Yep. It's very different from the U.S. version:1.) It initially aired as 15 half hour shows.2.) The whole ambiance is grittier.3.) The men are not as hot, with the exception of Charlie Hummun who plays Nathan(Justin). I love Charlie. (My opinion, obviously.)4.) The girl who plays Nathan's Daphne needs sub-titles. I never understood more than a word or two she said.I had a hard time getting into it, mostly because in the beginning the U.S. version used the U.K. dialog, unchanged. So when Stuart said, "Now you know what rimming is," I'm, like, He's NOT Brian. After a couple of episodes, however, the two shows grew apart and I liked it for its own sake. But I'm never going to obsess over it. FanSee

I'll definitely check out Bodily Fluids and Dominance in the near-future. I do like AU... well, it really depends on what kind of AU it is (I've read some horrid stories in which the main characters inexplicably live at the bottom of the sea, for example -- and the writing didn't make up for it). Speeking of AUs, I got so impatient with QAF fics in general that I googled Gaedhal and discovered the magnificent Queer Theories. Which brings me to why I'm writing this now, as opposed to tomorrow (I've been so into QT -- and the rest of my life -- I've been putting off writing back. Fell free to smack me): I was quite enjoying the second part of the saga, just about to go on to the chapter entitled Tyger, when something horrible happened: my computer is now insisting that any URLs pertaining to the story no longer exist. As you know, the part I left at is rather an interesting one, so I'm very put out that the story was so inopportunely cut off. Do I sound British to you? I'm not, I'm American, unfortunately (no offense meant to you). Anyway, Queer Theories, at least the part I'm at now, is set in London, and I've found myself thinking in an English accent. More tea, luv?The British version of QAF sounds interesting. I like the grit. How/ when did you see it, anyway?Once again, thanks so much for everything. Any other fabulous sagas to recommend?Off to see if the Queer Theories URL has come to its senses yet. Ta!
